Harper tops Joliet for Region IV title
The Harper College men's soccer team has earned itself a road trip.
The Hawks defeated Joliet Junior College 2-0 on Saturday in the NJCAA Region IV, Division III championship game.
That sends Harper to Minnesota next weekend for the three-team District championships.
Against Joliet, the visiting Wolves controlled most of the first half, with Hawks goalie Jacob Goldstein playing a key role early as it went to halftime without a goal. Goldstein had 10 first-half saves.
Harper's Manny Menjivar had the game's first goal 21 minutes into the second half, and Jaime Quintana assisted Niko Mihalopoulos with an insurance goal for the Hawks (11-3-3).
Goldstein finished with his seventh shutout of the season.
Joliet wraps up its season with a record of 10-8-1.
Women's soccer: Tuesday's NJCAA Division III, Region IV tournament championship game will feature two rivals - top seed College of DuPage and third seed Harper College. The Hawks defeated No. 2 seed Rock Valley College 2-1 Saturday in overtime to earn their spot in the title game.
COD won both regular-season matchups against Harper this season.
Women's volleyball: The Hawks tuned up for their Region IV playoff opener Wednesday by earning a pair of wins at Kankakee Community College.
Harper topped Kankakee 25-15, 25-17, 25-18 getting a team-best 11 kills from Shannon Igielski, 34 assists from Katelyn Sommers and 25 digs from Kayla Mayer.
The Hawks prevailed against Vincennes University 22-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-15 behind 14 kills from Sarah Berggren, 13 from Adriana Loiacono, 39 assists from Sommers and 24 digs from Mayer.
