DVD previews: 'The Gift,' 'Max'

Here's a look at DVDs coming out Tuesday, Oct. 27:

"The Gift" (R, 108 minutes, Universal): Psychological thriller starring Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall as a young married couple whose life is upended after he encounters an acquaintance from high school. Contains obscenity, sexual references and a fistfight or two. Blu-ray extras include an alternate ending, deleted scenes, "Karma for Bullies," "The Darker Side of Jason Bateman," trailers and commentary with writer-director Joel Edgerton.

"Max" (PG, 111 minutes, MGM/Warner): Drama about a military dog whose handler is killed in Afghanistan. The traumatized pooch, Max, returns to the United States and an uncertain future. Contains action, violence, peril, brief language. Extras include "Working With Max." Meet the dogs that play Max and see inside tricks of the trade. Blu-ray adds "Hero Dogs: A Journey," a behind-the-scenes look at amazing military-trained K9s.

"Pixels" (PG-13, 106 minutes, Sony): Adam Sandler, Peter Dinklage and Josh Gad battle aliens who attack Earth using classic arcade games such as "PAC-MAN" and "Donkey Kong" as their models. Contains some strong language and suggestive comments. Extras include two featurettes: "Q*Bert," the adorable digital bit hopper comes to life; "Dojo Quest" looks at the new classic arcade game that gave life to the unstoppable Lady Lisa; plus the "Game On" music video by Waka Flocka Flame featuring Good Charlotte. Blu-ray adds six more featurettes: "The Creator of the Machine" in which "PAC-MAN" creator Toru Iwatani goes on-set with a cameo and discusses his experience and his take on "Pixels"; "The Space Invader," about the winner of an arcade contest who had a walk-on role in the film; "PAC-MAN," a detailed look at the "PAC-MAN" action sequence; "Donkey Kong" stunts; behind-the-scenes "Centipede" giant insect attack; and an inside look at "Galaga," the '80s arcade favorite that leads the alien invasion.

"Southpaw" (R, 124 minutes, Weinstein Co.): A champion boxer (Jake Gyllenhaal) goes into a tailspin when his wife is killed in an accident and he loses his daughter and his home. He mounts a comeback and tries to redeem himself. Contains violence and obscenity.

Also: "Army of Darkness Collector's Edition" (special three-disc Blu-ray set features four versions of the Bruce Campbell cult film), "A Borrowed Identity" (Israeli drama about a Palestinian boy who falls in love with a Jewish girl), "Flowers" (silent horror film explores the afterlife of female victims of a serial killer), "The Horror Network" (anthology of six horror stories), "Jamel Shabazz Street Photographer" (documentary about NYC photographer and his subjects), "Monty Python and the Holy Grail: 40th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray" (includes new 30-minute "Monty Python and the Holy Grail at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival," a Q&A with Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, John Cleese and Eric Idle), "My Fair Lady: 50th Anniversary Edition."

Television series: "Downton Abbey Seasons 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5" (limited edition box set includes every episode of the first five seasons), "The Great American dream Machine" (satirical variety show that aired on PBS for two seasons from 1971-1972), "Miss Fisher's Murders Mysteries, Series 3" (adventures of a female detective in 1920s Australia).
