Charges filed in death of 3-year-old in January

GILLESPIE, Ill. (AP) - A southern Illinois man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and aggravated battery in the death of a 3-year-old boy.

William R. Bolin of Livingston was charged Thursday in the death of Ryder Vercoglio of Gillespie. The 24-year-old Bolin is accused of beating the boy Jan. 3, leading to his death two days later at a St. Louis hospital.

The State Journal-Register in Springfield reports (http://bit.ly/1LqJC2R ) the victim's family members say they are relieved charges have finally been filed. Bill Vercoglio, the child's grandfather, says the family attributes the delay in filing charges to the medical examiner being slow in conducting an autopsy.

Bolin, who was dating Ryder's mother at time of the boy's death, is being held at the Macoupin County Jail in lieu of $1 million bond.
