Cubs blast past St. Louis

The Chicago Cubs put on a show last night with six home runs in their 8-6 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at a packed and supercharged Wrigley Field. The victory gave the Cubs a 2-1 lead in this best-of-five National League Division Series. Read Bruce Miles' take here.

Fire damages Elgin business

A fire damaged the inventory Monday morning in an Elgin warehouse that sells shipping and storage boxes, fire officials said. The fire started just after 9 a.m. at Boxpartners.com, 2650 Galvin Dr., in the northwest corner of the warehouse. Full story.

Deal means McHenry students will return to class today

Students will return to McHenry Community High School today, ending an eight-day strike after the teachers union ratified a contract Monday afternoon. The contract puts more than 2,500 students back in District 156 schools. Full story.

Weather

Expect a cooler day today than yesterday after a cold front moved through, but it won't be as chilly as the days to come. Temperatures are starting about 50 degrees this morning and are expected to rise to about 60 degrees. Skies will be cloudy to begin the day and partly sunny by the afternoon. Traffic

Traffic has turned into a secondary Monday rush after some workers had the previous day off for Columbus Day. Delays are occurring on eastbound I-90 from west of Route 59 to Route 53 and on northbound I-294 from Oak Brook to Elmhurst. Crashes have been reported on northbound I-355 at Roosevelt Road and at Lake Street and Walnut Avenue in Hanover Park. Ongoing construction at Touhy Road along I-90 could cause another slow spot this morning and construction also continues on Higgins Road in Hoffman Estates and on Algonquin Road in Barrington Hills. The Blue Goose Market of St. Charles is considering opening a second store, in downtown Batavia. And the place being considered is the Walgreens store at 138 W. Wilson St. - after that store moves to a new building next door. Full story.

Bulls fall to Pelicans in preseason

The Chicago Bulls continued their early high-scoring ways under new head coach Fred Hoiberg, but they still fell 123-115 to the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday night at home.
