Naperville police: Teacher sent student inappropriate emails

A former Neuqua Valley High School teacher is facing a felony charge after being accused of sending inappropriate emails to a 16-year-old student, authorities said.

John S. Desmond, 37, of Darien has been charged with one count of unlawful grooming, Naperville police said Wednesday. Grooming is the act of using the Internet to seduce a minor into having sex.

Naperville police arrested Desmond Tuesday after detectives completed an investigation that was launched in July. The probe started when police received a report that Desmond was involved in an inappropriate email relationship with the 16-year-old student between May 1 and July 14.

Desmond was taken into custody at the Naperville police station, and his bail was set at $100,000. He was released after posting 10 percent, or $10,000.
