Lake County to celebrate Rollins Gateway completion

Lake County officials will celebrate the completion of the $69 million Rollins Gateway road improvement project with a special event at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Gateway Park, 704 E. Clarendon Drive in Round Lake Beach.

The work, which began in 2012, has been described as the largest and most complex construction project in the history of the Lake County Division of Transportation.

The centerpiece of the project was the construction of a railroad underpass for the new Rollins Road as it approached and goes through the intersection of Route 83. Previously, as many as 50 commuter and freight trains crossed Rollins at grade every day just west of Route 83, creating frustrating delays.

Gateway Park is on the southwest corner of Rollins Road and Hainesville Road. There are a limited number of parking spots, so please consider carpooling or parking across Rollins Road and using the pedestrian crossing at Mallard Creek Drive and walking along the bike path to the event location.
