Wheeling Park District searches for new commissioner

The Wheeling Park District is looking for a new member for its board of commissioners following the resignation of former President Keith Pecka.

Pecka's resignation was official Sept. 16 after he moved out of district boundaries. He had served on the board since 2003.

"He has been a great asset to the Park District and the community over the years," said Park District Communications Manager Mary Priller.

With Pecka's move, Vice President Sue Stein succeeded him as president.

Stein was elected to the board in 2009, and in 2013 the board voted her in as vice president.

The board of commissioners will appoint a new park commissioner to serve until after the 2017 consolidated election.

Wheeling Park District Executive Administrative Assistant Marian Krass says she anticipates the board will hold a special meeting to conduct individual interviews with applicants, and choose a new commissioner in November.

The board will also vote on a new vice president at its regularly scheduled Oct. 20 meeting.

Commissioners must have lived in the Wheeling Park District for one year and are required to be a registered voter. Commissioners are not compensated for their services.

Krass says the park district hasn't received any completed applications.

Applications can be found on the park district website, and the deadline to turn them in is Oct. 9.
