Bears continue house cleaning and release Vereen
First-year Bears general manager Ryan Pace continued to rid the roster of players acquired by his predecessor, Phil Emery, when he waived 2014 fourth-round draft pick Brock Vereen on Tuesday.
The 5-foot-11, 202-pound safety from Minnesota played just three snaps Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, but he was beaten for a 30-yard touchdown catch by perennial Pro Bowl tight end Jimmy Graham.
As a rookie, Vereen played in all 16 games and started five, with 38 tackles and 1 interception. But his lack of physicality did not impress the new regime during the preseason, and he played almost exclusively on special teams in the first three regular-season games.
A day earlier, the Bears traded linebacker Jon Bostic, a second-round pick in 2013, for a sixth-round draft choice. On the same day, they also traded 2014 unrestricted free-agent pass rusher Jared Allen for a sixth-rounder from Carolina.
The Bears signed two veterans on Tuesday, safety Chris Prosinski and linebacker LaRoy Reynolds, who will be counted on to help a struggling special teams unit that has given up 100-yard-plus kickoff returns in back-to-back games.
The 6-foot-2, 208-pound Prosinski has appeared in 56 games with nine starts over four seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2011-14) and Philadelphia Eagles (2014). He has 73 tackles, 1 interception and 6 pass breakups, along with 27 special teams tackles.
He was originally a fourth-round selection (121st overall) in 2011 out of Wyoming.
The 6-foot-1, 240-pound Reynolds has played in 30 games with three starts over three seasons in Jacksonville (2013-15). Undrafted out of Virginia, he has 22 tackles and 18 special teams tackles.
