Gratified by turnout at big recycle event

I want to say "Thanks" to all those folks who participated in the recycle event that state Rep. Morrison, state Sen. Murphy and I sponsored at Recreation Park last Saturday. The event was an overwhelming success with more than 800 cars coming through with local residents dropping off items to be recycled. No one expected a turn out that high!

I know that the number of cars caused a traffic slow down on Miner Street, but the Arlington Heights police did a great job of handling the traffic as best they could. I also know that some individuals were concerned that the shredding truck was not on-site for the materials dropped off to be shredded. That was due to our vendor's oversight, and it will not happen again.

The public need for this community event is evident in the amount of material that was dropped off for recycling: 167 pounds of unused prescription drugs; 12 full pallets of paper material that were shredded by the Cook County Sheriff's Department; dozens of eyeglasses given to the Lions Club; more than 24 bicycles, and thousands of pounds of electronic items.

Many thanks to the Arlington Heights Park District, the Arlington Heights Police Department, the young service volunteers from St. Viator and John Hersey high schools and all those who helped make the event such a remarkable success.

State Rep. David Harris
