Metra to test free wireless internet on 10 cars

CHICAGO (AP) - Metro Chicago's commuter rail agency plans to offer free wireless internet to passengers on 10 cars to test whether to offer the service system-wide.
Metra announced Friday the cars will be retrofitted with cellular "hot spots" by January. The agency wants to determine if the technology will provide dependable access to the internet.
CEO Don Orseno says if customers like the level of service and it's financially feasible Metra will seek funding or sponsorships to install Wi-Fi on more railcars.
The six-month pilot project will cost about $35,000.
Metra also plans to provide free wireless access in waiting areas at all five downtown Chicago rail stations within 45 days.
