Opponents ignore facts on Iran deal

Mr. Stack's screed against the Iran nuclear agreement displays an ignorance of the diplomatic situation and the impeachment provisions of the Constitution.

Mr. Stack, and many other critics of the agreement fail to consider that Iran is on the threshold of producing a nuclear weapon. Many experts believe that the weapon could be ready by spring of next year.

A diplomatic agreement may be the only way short of war that we have of stopping or slowing production of this weapon. If we decide to scrap the deal and force further concessions, Iran could have a nuclear weapon ready to use on our troops or Israeli troops before we could organize an invasion.

They also fail to consider that our closest allies, Britain, France and Germany, are signatories of the agreement and would continue to honor their commitments even if we do not. This would not only damage our international position, but would give Iran many of the economic benefits agreed to in the negotiations.

The 10-year delay in production of a weapon would give the international community time to use diplomacy to further change Iran's position.

I, along with Colin Powell, find this preferable to an invasion and potential nuclear exchange. With regard to Secretary Kerry, the Congress cannot fire the Secretary of State. Congress would be required to begin impeachment proceedings, just as they would with the president.

The Constitution requires that an official may be impeached for "high crimes or misdemeanors." Negotiating an international agreement with which some congressmen disagree does not rise to the level required.

As with most critics of this agreement, it doesn't matter if it's a good deal or a bad deal. It has to go because it is an Obama deal.
