Veenstra helps Grayslake Central snap out of slump

Trevor Veenstrsa scored twice, and Grayslake Central's boys soccer team broke out of a scoring slump by beating Prairie Ridge 3-0 in its Fox Valley Conference Fox Division opener Thursday.

The Rams had not scored in their previous three games.

Veenstra earned and converted a penalty kick in the opening 10 minutes. Leo Orozco followed up on a shot from Nick Walker on a quick counterattack to make it 2-0 before halftime. Some good combination play early in the second half led to Randy Betancourth playing a perfect through ball into Veenstra's path. Veenstra slotted inside the near post to cap a quality win for the Rams (7-4-2). Connor Gosell made 1 save en route to his fourth shutout of the season and the team's fifth.

"We're happy with the result, especially after back-to-back narrow losses," Grayslake Central coach Tom Hamilton said. "Over the past few games, we've played some quality teams that showed us where we were lacking, but we've learned from our mistakes and made the necessary adjustments. We still feel that we have work to do to meet our goals this season, but I'm pleased with the way the boys responded to their recent setbacks."
