St. Charles man gets 7 years for stealing bongs
The second of two men accused of stealing expensive bongs from a St. Charles store pleaded guilty Friday to aggravated robbery.
Rayshawn Vanperbandt, 21, agreed to a sentence of seven years in prison. A charge of armed robbery was dropped.
St. Charles police said Vanperbandt and Jacob M. Fahey, 21, both of St. Charles, robbed Tobacco and Gifts, 1556 E. Main St., Jan. 4. Vanperbandt held a knife. Fahey pointed a black gun at the clerk. It was determined later it was a pellet gun.
They took a multicolored glass-blown water pipe with a tripod base, and another water pipe with a coral and a dark-colored shark sitting atop the coral. Each was priced at $2,000.
The clerk recognized the two men from previous visits to the store. And two people told police they received Facebook messages offering to sell or trade the shark bong. It was determined Vanperbandt sent the messages.
Vanperbandt has been held in the Kane County jail since his arrest in January.
Fahey pleaded guilty Aug. 5 to armed robbery and aggravated battery of a peace officer. He is serving a 10-year sentence at the Vienna Correctional Center.
