Prospect looking for more trophies at Wheeling band competition

The 48th annual Chicagoland Marching Band Festival, the leading band competition in the Northwest suburbs, will take place this Saturday, Sept. 19, at Wheeling High School, with neighboring Prospect High School seeing if it can add to the trophies it picked up last weekend at the 37th annual Lake Park Lancer Joust, another of the major competitions.

The Prospect Marching Knights, competing against 18 other bands from Illinois and Wisconsin, took first place and the Grand Champion Award at the joust in Roselle. Northwest Suburban High School District 214's John Hersey and Wheeling High School bands also performed in the finals.

Prospect's show is "In Shining Armor," and features the music of Jenkins and Khachaturian. In preliminary competition, the Prospect Marching Knights placed first in class 3A and won caption awards for Outstanding Music, Outstanding Visual, Outstanding General Effect, Outstanding Percussion, and Outstanding Auxiliary (Color Guard).

In the finals, PMK took first place and was awarded Grand Champion. The band also earned caption awards for Outstanding Visual Performance and Outstanding General Effect.

Performances in the Wheeling competition begin at 3:25 p.m. and final awards are scheduled for 10 p.m. The school is at 900 S. Elmhurst Road. General admission is $12, $8 for students and senior citizens. Competing band members must have their hand stamped upon arrival at the festival for admission to the stadium. A wide variety of food and drinks will be for sale.
