Prospect Heights Dist. 23 teachers walk out

Parents of students in Prospect Heights Elementary District 23 are getting automatic calls this morning saying the strike is on after the school board and teachers union couldn't reach a deal early this morning. Both sides negotiated last night in an attempt to avoid a strike, but talks broke down after 12:30 a.m. and teachers walked out. Late last night, the board and union were still about $500,000 apart on salary negotiations. Full story.

End of era: Motorola Solutions HQ leaving Schaumburg after 50 years

Motorola Solutions Inc., the maker of communications equipment for government and first-responders, will send 800 jobs to Chicago by next summer along with its headquarters operations from Schaumburg. The entire 277-acre campus, once home to thousands of employees, will be put up for sale for redevelopment. "People come, people go," Schaumburg Mayor Al Larson said. COD board to vote on voiding Breuder's contract, renaming building

The College of DuPage board of trustees will vote Thursday on whether to void President Robert Breuder's employment contract and at the same time avoid placing his name on the school's Homeland Security Education Center. Trustees will take a vote to name the building in honor of late U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller, a former Wheaton resident and Medal of Honor recipient. College officials said Breuder's contract and all amendments and addendums exceeded the authority of previous boards. Full story.

Mt. Prospect hires Bensenville's village manager

Bensenville's village manager is going to Mount Prospect. Michael Cassady was hired last night by the village board, getting a $205,250 compensation package, that brings to end a roughly six-month, nationwide search that included 34 candidates. The position was left vacant after former manager Michael Janonis left in April with a $200,000 separation agreement. Full story.

Autopsy: McHenry County deputy died from blood clot in lung

An autopsy has determined McHenry County sheriff's deputy Dwight Maness died from a blood clot in his lungs, and while State's Attorney Lou Bianchi said he suspects it may have been a result of his injuries sustained from an on-duty shooting, he said "it's too early to tell." Full story.

As Republican hopefuls debate, their Illinois backers organize

As the Republican candidates for president elbow for attention on the CNN stage tonight, top members of the Illinois GOP have started choosing their favorites and putting together organizations here that could be critical once the March 15 state primary comes along. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio both had fundraisers in the area last week, and former Florida Gov. State Sen. Dan Kotowski to resign in three weeks

State Sen. Dan Kotowski plans to step down from his seat in three weeks to take a job with a nonprofit focused on helping at-risk children and families. The Park Ridge Democrat told the Daily Herald yesterday he has accepted a post as president and CEO of ChildServ, based in Chicago. His departure will open the door for local Democratic Party officials to select a replacement. Full story.

Palatine Twp. man dies after reaction from bee sting

A 49-year-old Palatine-area man died Sunday after suffering an anaphylactic reaction from a bee sting, authorities said yesterday. Guy Jacobucci phoned 911 after 4 p.m. Sunday to say that he was stung by a bee and having an adverse reaction, according to the Cook County sheriff's office. Full story.

Lester helps Cubs salvage a split doubleheader

The Cubs salvaged a doubleheader split with the National League Wild Card-leading Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday. The Cubs came from 3-1 down in the first game, only to see Justin Grimm cough up what proved to be the game-winning run in the eighth inning as the Pirates prevailed 5-4. In the night game, Jon Lester tossed his first complete game of the year, and the Cubs won 2-1. Full story.
