Addison Trail defeats Glenbard South

The Addison Trail boys soccer team, like most squads, has things it wants to accomplish this season.

Blazers coach Ryan Dini reminded his team at halftime of Thursday's 2-1 victory at Glenbard South that just one goal, on a penalty kick, during the first 40 minutes wasn't going to cut it against the Raiders or any other team that Addison Trail needs to get past this season to be successful.

Just less than four minutes after Glenbard South (2-4) tied the game early in the second half, Noel Diaz made a cross that eventually made its way to Tomasz Kania, who deposited it for the 2-1 advantage and eventual victory.

"I got the cross and the goalie blocked it (his initial shot). It rebounded off another player and I put it in," Kania said. "It definitely increased our momentum."

Dini said the Blazers (5-2) needed to have their game in good working order against the Raiders.

"I'm pleased with the victory. Their goalie played a heck of a game. They outplayed us," he said "We're trying to raise our level. Our goal is to get better and better. We haven't won a regional in 15 years. We're trying to win as many games before the seeding meeting, get a high seed and see what happens in the playoffs."

Glenbard South goalkeeper Kiran Sandiford, a senior, made 12 saves as Addison Trail outshot the Raiders for the contest.

The Blazers took a 1-0 lead with 24:45 left until halftime as Enrique Luna was tackled in the penalty box and he made good on the penalty kick. The score remained the same at halftime.

With 5:37 gone in the second half, Glenbard South's Matthew Waters went on a breakaway around midfield and got a clear look at an open part of the net and made good on the chance.

The Raiders came into the game after losing 6-1 against Fenton on Tuesday.

"That (Waters goal) gave us a nice boost of energy," coach Adam Szyszko said. "We played a real stinker on Tuesday. I was pleased with our effort. Addison Trail is a good program year in and year out. We stayed in the game and that was good coming off of Tuesday."

Winning goalkeeper Cosme Garcia finished with 5 saves for Addison Trail.
