Police: Guns found during wedding scuffle near Zion

Bail was set for three men held in Lake County jail after a confrontation at a wedding near Zion, officials said.

James Bakken, 33, of the 11300 block West Carnahan Avenue in Beach Park, is held on $100,000 bail, while Oscar Cervantes, 28, of the 100 block of North St. James Street in Waukegan, and Matthew Bowen, 25, of the 11200 block of West Leland Avenue in Beach Park, are each held on $25,000 bail.

The three were charged with mob action, among other crimes, after police were called to the 100 block of Lakefront Drive near Zion to break up a confrontation involving handguns at 2:40 a.m. Monday, authorities said.

Cervantes brandished a handgun and pointed it at a 23-year-old victim during the confrontation, authorities said. Bakken also produced a handgun and used it to strike a victim in the face. Bowen was also involved in the confrontation, though authorities did not provide details about his role.

Bowen and the victim were guests at the wedding, officials said, but Bakken and Cervantes were not.

The three suspects attempted to run from police, authorities said, but Lake County sheriff's deputies caught them and recovered two loaded .380 handguns.

In addition to the mob action charges all three received, Bakken is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and unlawful use of weapon by a felon, officials said. Bowen faces charges of assault, unlawful possession of cannabis, and disorderly conduct, officials said, while Cervantes is charged with aggravated assault.
