Nazareth prevails against Carmel

Host Carmel Catholic dropped its East Suburban Catholic Conference girls volleyball opener 25-12, 20-25, 25-17 to Nazareth Academy on Tuesday.

Erin Taylor and Allie Wayland had 12 and 7 kills, respectively for Carmel (7-3). Cate Halverson had 3 blocks, while Grace Butler dished out 28 assists. Elizabeth Tworek totaled 19 digs.

"Naz has always been tough to play against," Corsairs coach Dave Pazely said. "They are well coached and well balanced. We did our best to fight back after making some lineup changes in the second set, but our inconsistencies got the better of us as Naz kept the pressure up and punished whenever we didn't execute."

Mundelein d. Waukegan: McKenzie Theis had 4 kills and 3 blocks, as the Mustangs won 25-15, 25-14 in nonconference action.

Julia Loverde served 16 of 16 for Mundelein, while Mackenzie Linane set 12 of 12 with 5 assists and added 2 blocks. Megan Nugent was 19-of-20 setting with 4 assists. Tess Pribyl and Sidney Brunkow recorded 10 and 8 digs, respectively.

Grant d. Round Lake: Hannah Johnson slammed 12 kills, as the Bulldogs outlasted the Panthers 25-14, 22-25, 25-13 in a North Suburban Prairie opener.

Kylie Mueller and Megan Gebauer added 7 kills apiece for Grant, while Megan Whitmen served 8 of 8 with 2 aces. Kelli Varney was 17-of-17 serving with 2 aces, Mueller delivered 4 aces on 12-of-13 serving, and Kate Kiser hit 9 of her 12 serves. Kiser also set 75 of 80 with 31 assists. Varney registered 6 digs.

Prairie Ridge d. Grayslake Central: Morgan Anderberg had 14 digs for the Rams in their 25-14, 25-16 Fox Valley Fox loss.

Allie Daul had 3 kills for Grayslake Central (4-8, 0-1). Marie Gerbasi posted 11 digs and 2 kills.

"We played sound defense against a tough Prairie Ridge team," Rams coach Jason Janczak said.
