Mundelein hostage situation was a hoax

A reported hostage situation Monday morning in Mundelein turned out to be a hoax, according to police.

And if they find out who was behind it, that person can expect to face felony criminal charges, Police Chief Eric Guenther said.

A call came in at 8:57 a.m. on the police department's nonemergency line, Guenther said. The caller identification was blocked.

The caller told police he had a gun, had shot one occupant of the home and was considering shooting two more occupants.

Police from Mundelein and two other departments responded, as did the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System special weapons and tactics team. A fire department ambulance was also on standby near the scene.

Police were able to reach the person who owned the house, who was on vacation. Relatives came over and let police in to verify it was the a hoax.

Nobody was injured.

The homeowners declined to comment on the event.
