Musicians, storytellers perform at festival in Geneva

The 39th annual Fox Valley Folk Music and Storytelling Festival wrapped up two days of fun Monday at Island Park in Geneva.

The largest folk festival in the state featured dozens of musicians and storytellers on multiple stages.

Juel Ulven of Aurora, the founder and chief organizer, said some of the crowd-pleasers included Irish musicians, as well as the Chicago Sacred Harp singers who led audiences in shape note singing.

At a Sacred Harp Singers performance, you can "sit down and learn to read sheet music in 15 minutes," Ulven said before the fest,

"They do that in the pavilion. It's a 'wall of sound' experience."

The festival was sponsored by the Fox Valley Folklore Society, the Geneva Park District and the City of Geneva.
