New race, traditional parade highlight Labor Day in Naperville

Racers tried a new challenge or two Monday during the final day of the 50th annual Last Fling festival in Naperville.

The new Rooster 5K took off for its first year from the base of Rotary Hill for a 3.1-mile course. Runners who chose to compete in the new race along with the traditional Fling Mile completed the inaugural Fling Challenge, and certainly earned a carnival treat or two for their efforts.

Labor Day at the annual celebration also included a parade led by grand marshal Rick Motta, a Naperville barber who founded the Last Fling 50 years ago as a thank-you to the community from business people.

Concerts, carnival rides, a business expo and a family fun area wrapped up the final day of the four-day fest, which raises money for charitable causes selected by the Naperville Jaycees.
