UnitedHealthcare Recognizes Mundelein Company for Successful Worksite Wellness Program

UnitedHealthcare has announced the winners of its "Well Deserved" award, an annual honor given to employers that have implemented innovative, industry-leading worksite wellness programs that helped improve their employees' health and well-being.

Mundelein, Ill.-based Medline, a global manufacturer and distributor serving the healthcare industry with medical supplies and clinical solutions across the continuum of care, offers a diverse wellness program to its employees and families. Features include the following:

• Free, on-site biometric screenings, health risk assessment tools, flu shots, mammograms and health seminars at many locations

• Bilingual nurse liaison who meets one-on-one with employees, leads lectures, performs blood pressure screenings and travels to various locations and divisions

• Discounted wellness-related employee purchase campaigns in addition to gym membership reimbursements

Medline also offers subsidized healthy menu options and has a staffed fitness center at its corporate office in Mundelein, Ill. In addition, the company's call center in Dubuque, Iowa created an inside walking track and a meditation room for stress management. Medline also incorporates a robust ergonomic program for employees with more than 700 kangaroo desks to encourage standing instead of sitting in the office.

"Medline is committed to improving patient care and enhancing the quality of people's lives. That's why improving the health and wellness of our employees matters a great deal to us and is a natural extension of that commitment," says Karen Ferraro, chief human resources officer at Medline. "We are proud to receive this honor and look forward to developing more programs to improve the wellness of our employees."

Other organizations in Illinois earning a Well Deserved award include:

• American Hotel Register Company, Vernon Hills, Ill.

• SIRVA, Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, worksite wellness programs "can improve employee satisfaction, reduce stress, decrease absenteeism and increase productivity." UnitedHealthcare data reveal that worksite wellness programs may result in lower medical costs and better primary and preventive health care decisions for employees who participate.

"UnitedHealthcare congratulates these companies for encouraging a culture of health at their workplaces and helping their employees live healthier lives," said Colleen Van Ham, president and CEO, UnitedHealthcare of Illinois and Northwest Indiana. "A healthier and more engaged workforce can lead to better health as well as increased employee satisfaction and productivity."

This is UnitedHealthcare's seventh year of recognizing employer customers with "Well Deserved" awards for their outstanding health and wellness programs, working with an external broker review panel to review and judge all applicants.
