How much will Sox be seeing Rodon in September?
September is going to be an interesting month for Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Carlos Rodon.
The rookie left-hander might make every start and try to build off an impressive recent run. Rodon might also skip a turn or two during the final month of the season to make sure he's fresh for 2016.
"He's had some games where we've taken him out early; he's had some games where we've left him out there and he's been able to overcome some stuff," Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "Innings-wise, he's good. I would like to see him keep going. As far as his first year and how he's getting through it, it's been great. His progression has been fine, too."
Rodon has logged 112⅔ innings this season and is 6-5 with a 4.15 ERA. Among major-league rookies, Tampa Bay's Nathan Karns ranks first with 136 strikeouts. Rodon is second with 126.
If Rodon needs a break, the White Sox could turn to a prospect such as Erik Johnson or Frankie Montas when rosters expand in September.
"There might be a spot in there where you can skip him and kind of get him into that better line of where you'd like to see him end up," Ventura said. "I also like to see him keep going out there and getting the repetition of being out there every five days."
Over his last 4 starts, Rodon has allowed only 5 earned runs in 28 innings (1.60 ERA) while striking out 29.
Putnam to DL:
Relief pitcher Zach Putnam landed on the disabled list Saturday with a strained right groin. The right-hander initially suffered the injury a week earlier when the Sox were in Seattle.
"Including myself, we all wanted me to get back out there ASAP, and I think with something like this it was just a little too soon," said Putnam, who pitched 1 inning Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox. "They can't be down a man in the bullpen for much longer. Those guys are pretty taxed. They needed to make a move, and this was the move."
Putnam is 3-3 with a 3.07 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 41 innings.
Webb back up:
With Zach Putnam on the disabled list, the White Sox returned Daniel Webb from his injury rehabilitation assignment at Class AAA Charlotte. Webb was on the DL with a back strain.
"I feel great," he said. "Compared to how it felt, it feels a lot better."
