Mundelein Fire Department open house Sept. 13

The Mundelein Fire Department will host its annual Open House from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, at 1000 North Midlothian Road.

This free family event provides participants with an opportunity to see firsthand what firefighters do, learn important safety tips, and have fun while doing both.

As in past years, a medical helicopter will land and guests will be able to talk to the flight crew and tour the helicopter. An actual fire will be set in two demonstration rooms to illustrate how fire sprinklers work, and the "Jaws of Life" will be demonstrated on a simulated car accident. Mundelein Divers will be in a portable dive tank, and children will have the opportunity to talk to them while they are underwater.

Fire Engine 2 will provide rides from the parking lot at Mechanics Grove to the fire station. Other events include: fire engine and ambulance displays, fire extinguisher training with real fire, and children can learn and practice the stop, drop, and roll technique.

The event takes place rain or shine, as it is a precursor to National Fire Prevention Week. This year's slogan is "Hear the Beep Where you Sleep."
