Severe storms rolled through the area last night and left 14,000 ComEd customers without power. DuPage County was under a tornado warning until 8:30 p.m., but no tornadoes were reported. Tornado sirens were also reported in Bartlett, Hanover Park and Lisle. More rain is possible today. Full story.

COD board to consider firing Breuder

College of DuPage trustees are poised to begin the process of firing embattled President Robert Breuder, an effort that could start Thursday but may take months, officials said yesterday. “COD's president has been on administrative leave pending the results of our investigations,” board Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said yesterday in a written statement. “The investigations have resulted in this proposed action for board consideration.” One trustee said he is not favoring starting firing proceedings. Hoffman Estates motorcyclist hit barrier in fatal crash near I-290, I-94

The Cook County medical examiner's office ruled yesterday that the death of 50-year-old Hoffman Estates resident Steve Sanchez was an accident. Spokesman Frank Shuftan says Sanchez was riding his motorcycle near the interchange of Interstates 290 and 94 Saturday when he crashed into a concrete barrier and was thrown from his motorcycle to a construction site on the roadway below. New teacher resource launched at District 214 ‘a model'

Northwest Suburban High School District 214 is the site of a new 21st Century Learning Center that will offer Illinois teachers lesson plans and resources for a variety of classes through iTunes U. The project comes from Vision 20/20, a group of six different education associations in Illinois. “This is going to be an exciting opportunity to see some rich teaching with technology embedded,” Michael Jacoby, executive director of the Illinois Association of School Board Officials said. State board of education to consider ACT or SAT contract without funds for it

Suburban families could soon have to front the bill for their high school students to take college entrance exams including the ACT and SAT. The state board of education was scheduled to vote yesterday on a $20 million three-year contract to provide the college entrance exams. Some suburban schools say they're working on contingency plans, including paying for the exams themselves, if the state doesn't provide the funding. Full story.

Custodian strike to greet Barrington High students on first day

Janitors who are unsatisfied with their pay at Barrington High School will begin striking Thursday as students arrive for the first day of school. Izabela Miltko of the Service Employees International Union says union members are negotiating a new contract with their employer, RJB Properties, and decided to strike after a bargaining session yesterday. “The last thing they want to do is go on strike, but something has got to give,” she said. “$8.50 is nowhere near enough to live in Barrington and support their family.” Full story.

Tigers' late rally beats Cubs in a late game

Just over an hour into the Cubs-Tiger game last night, light rains turned heavy and caused a delay with the Tigers leading the Cubs 5-2 in the bottom of the third inning. Play resumed after a delay of 2 hours and 17 minutes. Even though the Cubs lost the game 10-8, there were some late-night fireworks by rookie Kyle Schwarber, whose 3-run homer in the fifth brought the Cubs within a run. Full story.

Chicago Bears moving practice to Indy

The Chicago Bears will begin practicing against the Indianapolis Colts today and Thursday. After two days of practicing, the Bears and the Colts will meet for a preseason game Saturday night at Lucas Oil Stadium. Bears coach John Fox expects the practices and game to be a positive experience. Full story.
