White Sox snap Cubs' 9-game winning streak

Chris Sale cooled off the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

On a scorching hot afternoon at U.S. Cellular Field, Sale and the Chicago White Sox were 3-1 winners, snapping the Cubs' winning streak at 9 games.

It was the second straight dominant start for Sale, who was hit hard by the Boston Red Sox on July 30 and the Tampa Bay Rays on Aug. 4.

Sale (11-7) pitched 7 innings against the Cubs and allowed only 1 hit while matching a career high with 15 strikeouts.

“I think he got over the hump, he went through a period where I think he had the strikeout streak going on,” White Sox manager Robin Ventura said before Sunday's game. “I think that can probably get to you somewhat, and have that a little bit too much of a focus instead of pitching. He got over that and he rebooted. I just see him being a little more comfortable going back out there and doing what he's capable of.”

From May 23 through June 30, Sale had 10 or more strikeouts in 8 straight starts, tying Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez for the longest streak in major-league history.

Against the Cubs, Sale had a no-hitter until Dexter Fowler singled with one out in the sixth inning.

Cubs starter Dan Haren (8-8) took the loss after allowing 3 runs on 7 hits in 4⅔ innings.

Haren gave up 3 solo home runs.

Jose Abreu hit No. 22 in the third inning, Alexei Ramirez hit No. 8 in the fourth and Melky Cabrera hit No. 8 in the fifth.

Jorge Soler homered off Sox closer David Robertson with two outs in the ninth inning to account for the Cubs' lone run.
