Cops still hunting for one of two Naperville robbery suspects

Naperville police have one man in custody and are searching for a second believed to have been involved in a Monday morning robbery near the city's police station.

Officers from Naperville and Aurora, along with DuPage sheriff's deputies and state troopers, conducted a door-to-door search and closed side streets near the police station for nearly four hours Monday, but the second suspect was not found.

Police said the two men used a stolen car to trigger a minor traffic accident with the victim around 8 a.m. near the intersection of Bailey and Shepherd in an attempt to lure the victim, a known gambler, from his car. The men may have targeted the victim and followed him for some distance, possibly from a nearby casino, authorities said.

After beating and robbing the victim, the men fled in a small, black stolen car before ditching it near the intersection of River and Thornapple roads when police attempted to stop them, Cmdr. Lou Cammiso said.

Both suspects tried to run away, but one was immediately caught. The second man remains at large.

Cammiso said the second suspect is a thin white man, about 6 feet tall, who was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.

Police closed several side streets and conducted house-by-house searches in the perimeter bounded by West Street on the east, Oswego Road on the south and River Road on the west. The searches are over, and the roads have reopened.

"We've shut down the perimeter and the focus on this area. But he could be out there on foot, anywhere," Cammiso said Monday afternoon. "Even though we've stopped that search, we're actively trying to figure out where this guy is and who he is."

Residents are asked to report any suspicious activity to Naperville police as the search continues.
