Naper Settlement's really old-fashioned picnic

There are old-fashioned picnics and then there are really old-fashioned picnics.

Just ask those who visited Naper Settlement on Saturday for the living-history museum's Hometown Picnic that featured 1850s-style baseball (played by guys called "ballists"), a baking contest (apple pie, please), games that didn't require electronic devices (imagine!) and a demonstration of a vintage fire pumper.

If folks felt they had stepped back in time, well, that was exactly the idea.

This is the fourth year the outdoor museum near downtown Naperville has sponsored the picnic, which normally attracts a couple hundred visitors.
