SRACLC fishermen cast their lines at fishing derby

Submitted by the Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County

The Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County hosted their 25th Annual Fishing Derby on July 29. Families were invited to spend the afternoon with their campers.

The event began with a picnic-style lunch at Big Bear Lake in Vernon Hills, afterward the fishing competition began. Nearly 200 people took to the pier and shores for an afternoon of fishing, carnival games, and special guests, including state Sen. Terry Link and state Rep. Carol Sente. Ronald McDonald performed magic tricks and the Brookfield Zoo brought a traveling exhibit including live animals and educational crafts.

As the fishing came to an end, it was calculated that over 130 fish were caught and released, thanks to the help of the Arlington Anglers fishing club. Then it was time to award the trophies for the biggest and most fish caught. Evan Nickolson from Grayslake caught the biggest fish, Patrick Sanchez from Vernon Hills caught 17 fish receiving the award for the most fish, and Andrew Koppel caught the second most fish.

The awards ceremony concluded with the awards for the Camp Counselors of the Year which were awarded to Lucas Thompson from the Grayslake Camp Site, Eric Doerhoefer from the Mundelein Camp Site, and Katrina Peterson from the Teens In Action Camp. Campers of the Year were awarded to Brayden Henriot, Andrew Koppel, and Dani Lococo.

The entire day was a huge success as SRACLC families from across Central Lake County came out to enjoy the beautiful weather and a variety of exciting activities.
