Boomers notch 6-1 win over Miners

The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers opened a nine-game homestand with a 6-1 victory over the Southern Illinois Miners.

Facing the 2014 Frontier League Pitcher of the Year, Raul Jacobson outdueled Matt Bywater. Jacobson tossed a career high 7.2 innings and allowed just a single run on 5 hits while striking out six. With the game even a 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Ty Nelson rocketed a 3-run double into the right field corner to hand the Boomers a 4-1 lead. Willi Martin added an RBI single as the Boomers plated four runs to chase Bywater from the game.

Kyle Ruchim and Martin each finished with 3 hits in the contest. Ruchim logged three doubles to extend his hitting streak to 17 games, matching the second longest streak in team history. Mike Schulze logged a single and has reached base in 31 consecutive contests at home.

The Boomers (29-38) continue the homestand with game two of the series on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. Right-hander Taylor Thurber (1-1, 3.60), the Frontier League Pitcher of the Week, takes the hill opposite right-hander Adam Lopez (9-0, 1.89).
