Police: Motorcyclist had mechanical trouble before fatal crash
A 54-year-old Aurora man whose motorcycle apparently had mechanical trouble was killed in an early morning crash Thursday on Butterfield Road, authorities said.
Bradley L. Stein died after a large truck hit him while he was making a U-turn from eastbound to westbound Butterfield, authorities said.
The crash occurred about 7:10 a.m. roughly 800 feet west of Hedge Row Drive in the DuPage County section of Aurora.
Witnesses told police they saw Stein making a U-turn when his motorcycle appeared to have mechanical difficulties. He was hit by a 2003 Mack truck driven by a 44-year-old man from Ottawa, authorities said.
Stein, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at 10:05 a.m. at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. He was flown there after Aurora paramedics took him to Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora.
Police said Thursday the truck driver has not been ticketed and alcohol does not appear to have been a factor. An autopsy on Stein will not be performed.
Butterfield Road was closed between Eola Road and Farnsworth Avenue for about four hours while Aurora traffic investigators reconstructed the crash.
