Lake County Fair set to open
Tuesday was setup day at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Grayslake.
Vendors, 4-H participants and exhibitors got everything ready for the 87th annual Lake County Fair, which begins Wednesday, at the fairgrounds at Peterson and Midlothian roads in Grayslake.
The theme of this year's fair is Summer's Best Fest, and organizers say the fair is a combination of historic traditions and new exhibits.
"We here at the Lake County Fair have everything that you love about summer in a big and wonderful way," said Matt Robertson, general manager of the Lake County Fair Association. "We looked at all the traditional things and we tried to bump it up a notch."
That includes Friday Night Destruction, which features buses, trailers and other trucks that drive in a figure 8 and the Demo Derby on Sunday, Robertson said. "Pretty much, if it's got four tires, we are going to smash it up," he said.
However, the fair will also make a concerted effort to highlight its rural roots, including livestock barns featuring tours and auctions.
The fair also offers two rodeos, fireworks, motocross, tractor pulls, musical entertainment, food, carnival rides and games and many other attractions.
Fair hours are: Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Sunday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Gates open at 8 a.m. for livestock events. Tickets range from $5 to $10.
