Aurora child drowning under investigation

The death of an 18-month-old child, who apparently drowned in a small swimming pool at his Aurora home Friday, remains under investigation, Aurora police said Saturday.

Uriel Lopez was found floating face down in the family's backyard pool by his 6-year-old sister around 8:40 p.m. in the 800 block of Hinman Street.

Despite CPR attempts and other lifesaving efforts by police and paramedics, the boy was pronounced dead at 9:41 p.m. at Rush Copley Medical Center in Aurora, police said.

"At this time, Uriel's death appears to be a tragic accident," Aurora police said in a statement.

According to the preliminary investigation, the boy and his mother, father and two sisters, had just returned home from grocery shopping.

While the family was putting away groceries, the boy walked into the backyard without anyone's knowledge and made his way into the pool.

His family estimates he was only out of their sights for about 5 minutes, police said.

An autopsy is pending at the Kane County Coroner's Office in Geneva.
