Texas jail: Naperville woman previously attempted suicide

Texas authorities said yesterday records show Sandra Bland told officials that she previously attempted suicide. Yet at the same time the Naperville woman indicated she was not feeling suicidal when she was jailed July 10. She was found dead in her cell three days later and authorities say she hanged herself with a plastic bag. Bland's family has ordered a second, independent autopsy and plans to hire an expert to do a forensic analysis of the police dashboard video. Full story.

Selfie sticks no more at Six Flags:

Following a similar decision by Disney, Six Flags has banned selfie sticks from its amusement parks across America. The company implemented the new policy Monday at its 16 locations across the United States, plus one each in Mexico and Canada. The goal is to prevent incidents involving such objects, a spokeswoman said. Full story.

Rosemont Gene & Georgetti's opening night

The steaks were sizzling and cocktails poured strong last night at the grand opening of the new Gene & Georgetti restaurant in Rosemont - only the second location in the legendary Chicago steakhouse's 75-year history. The 260-seat restaurant at 9421 W. Higgins Road is open for lunch and dinner Mondays through Fridays, and dinner on Saturdays. Full story.

Morrison picked for 17th District in Cook County:

Sean M. Morrison, a Palos Township Republican committeeman, was picked to replace Elizabeth "Liz" Doody Gorman to represent the 17th District on the Cook County Board. Gorman resigned effective July 20. In the last two or so years, the Cook County Board has done "a really good job in starting the process of getting the budget under control and cutting costs and spending," Morrison said, "but there is plenty of work to go." Is Metra app good enough?

Metra leaders said an upcoming Ventra app for smartphones is the next-best thing to a universal fare card, which state law had required them to provide by Jan. 1 along with Pace and CTA. Metra officials have said they're hamstrung by having an "open system" where people board before showing proof they've paid. Metra ticket agents do accept Ventra cards for payment at stations if a debit card feature is activated. Full story.

Chicago red-light camera case could affect the suburbs:

Attorneys have renewed their fight against Chicago's red-light camera program in a case that also could decide the future of the cameras in the suburbs. Attorney Patrick Keating argues that because the Illinois law allows red-light cameras in suburban counties but not in dozens of downstate counties, it's unfair and violates the state constitution. A hearing is set for next week in Chicago. Full story.

Elgin man charged with child porn:

A 26-year-old Elgin man is scheduled to appear in Kane County bond court this morning because he was arrested after police found child pornography on a computer. Samuel Galvan of the 700 block of North Grove Avenue was charged with 10 counts of possession of child pornography, a felony, after a four-month investigation, police said. Full story.

Top administrator picked for DuPage County Forest Preserve

DuPage Forest Preserve commissioners are scheduled to vote next week on a $165,000, one-year contract for Michael Hullihan to serve as executive director for the district, ending a nearly yearlong search to fill the top administrative post. Hullihan is Oak Brook's public works director. The last executive director hire was Arnie Biondo, who lasted less than eight months on the job. Full story.

Mount Prospect strip mall to be razed

The Mount Prospect village board hired a company to demolish Central Plaza, a strip shopping center at the northwest corner of Central and Elmhurst roads. The strip mall, often called a blight on the downtown, has been abandoned by its owners. Full story.

Cubs and Reds split doubleheader

The Cubs overcame a 5-run deficit in their biggest comeback of the season for a 6-5 victory and a doubleheader split with the Cincinnati Reds. Cincinnati won the opener 9-1 behind another strong showing by Mike Leake. In the second game last night, Taylor Teagarden singled home the tiebreaking run off Aroldis Chapman with two outs in the ninth inning. Full story.
