Arlington Heights man dies in southern Wisconsin lake

An Arlington Heights man was found dead in Delavan Lake in Wisconsin on Thursday morning, officials said.

Scott Apel, 49, was out on a boat with some co-workers around 11 p.m. Wednesday when they decided to go for a swim, said Police Sgt. Erik Voss of the Delavan, Wisconsin department.

The group was swimming near the boat when Apel went under and his co-workers could not find him.

Emergency crews searched through the night and recovered Apel's body around 9 a.m. Thursday.

He was not wearing a flotation device at the time, Voss said. He added the lake is about 38 feet deep where they were swimming with only about one foot of visibility.

Delavan Lake is open 24/7, but officials said they do not recommend being out on it so late at night.

Voss said this is the first death this summer on Delavan Lake, which is in southern Wisconsin near Lake Geneva.

An autopsy will be performed on Friday morning in Waukesha County. Foul play is not suspected.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is handling the investigation.
