Fuel sold at Bolingbrook Meijer may have been contaminated

Meijer is warning customers that diesel fuel sold at its Bolingbrook store may have been contaminated with unleaded gas, a company spokesman said Thursday.

Roughly 90 customers may have been affected, and three have since come forward complaining of issues with their vehicles, spokesman Frank Guglielmi said.

Anyone who bought the diesel fuel from 9 p.m. Thursday, July 16, through 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, at the Meijer on East Boughton Road is asked to call 1-800-543-3704.

The supplier who transports fuel from a wholesaler to Meijer stores accidentally put unleaded fuel in the diesel underground tank, Guglielmi said.

The tank already was more than 50 percent full. Diesel is heavier than unleaded and sinks to the bottom of the tank. When drivers fill up their cars, the pumps draw from the bottom of the tank, so "there's a very good chance people have not even been affected," Guglielmi said.

Still, Meijer is attempting to reach customers and apologized for the error.
