Mayor has right to express fears

With all due respect for your right of "free speech," I question the reason and basis of the Daily Herald's editorial criticizing Mundelein Mayor Steve Lentz for publicly expressing his disdain for the SCOTUS same-sex marriage ruling.

Four dissenting justices had concluded the SCOTUS ruling has nothing to do with the Constitution. Judges have power to say what the law is, not what it should be. It short-circuits the political process by disallowing states to define marriage for themselves; and it is disrespectfully a show of raw judicial activism.

Mayor Lentz mentioned other societal issues as unwed mothers and alcoholics, whose particular needs and circumstances may affect the everyday government and economy of the people of Mundelein. As I have observed through life, economic problems usually go hand-in-hand with moral problems.

It seems no sooner did the ink dry on this controversial ruling, when lo-and-behold the "progressive" press comes out to shout their disapproval of any statement from opponents - be they coming from senior citizens or from a mayor of Mundelein. I believe the First Amendment covers the right of free speech and religious expression for all, and that right was won through the blood and sacrifice of millions of Americans.

The fear that the SCOTUS same-sex marriage ruling will cause the future end of free-speech and religious expression liberties has already raised its menacing head - right here in my own neighborhood paper.

Surprise! "The Donald" seems to be soaring in popular appeal and the reason being that he's not afraid to speak out flamboyantly on pressing national issues at a time when we observe our ship of state sinking fast. An erected system of political correctness and groupthink can never take the place of honest and challenging speech.

How refreshing!
