Culvert collapse prompts road closure in Long Grove

A culvert beneath Diamond Lake Road in Long Grove collapsed Friday, causing the asphalt pavement to give way, authorities said.

The damaged culvert is at Indian Creek. A car length of pavement collapsed.

No cars fell into the deep gap, and no one was hurt, Lake County Transportation Division spokeswoman Brooke Hooker said. Transportation crews were in the area Friday working on a different section of the road when the damage was discovered, she said.

The road will be closed until it can be repaired. A time estimate was not available.

Motorists should use Gilmer Road and Route 83 as a detour.

The transportation division will handle the repair. The culvert was scheduled to be replaced in 2016, but the season's heavy rains accelerated its deterioration, officials said.
