Memorial planned for 2012 Libertyville High alum
A Libertyville man who died in California earlier this month will be memorialized here Sunday.
Cameron R. Gillen, 21, was a 2012 Libertyville High graduate who later attended the College of Lake County. At Libertyville High, he was on the wrestling, track and football teams.
Gillen died July 1 after diving off a cliff at Angora Lakes, a recreation area in Northern California near South Lake Tahoe. He hit the base of the cliff instead of going into the water cleanly, police said.
People often jump from the cliffs there, said Lt. Bryan Golmitz of the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office. Deaths are uncommon, he said.
A memorial gathering for Gillen is planned for 11 a.m. Sunday at the Independence Grove Forest Preserve near Libertyville.
Memorials may be sent to the Wildcat Support Fund at Libertyville High School, 708 W. Park Ave., Libertyville, IL, 60048.
Donors should mention Gillen's name on a check's memo line.
Survivors include Gillen's parents, two siblings and three grandparents.
