Man in critical condition following rollover crash in Itasca
Authorities say a man remains in critical condition after a single-vehicle crash Sunday in Itasca.
The man's SUV rolled over on the ramp from westbound I-290 to Thorndale Avenue at 3:17 p.m., police said.
Itasca Deputy Fire Chief John Radzinski said rescuers worked for about 45 minutes to extricate the man, who authorities have not yet publicly identified, from his vehicle before he was loaded into a helicopter and flown to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.
"It was one of the most difficult, extensive extrications we've ever had. He was really pinned in there," Radzinski said. "We haven't had to call for a helicopter in four years but, based on what our guys saw when they rescued him, he needed to get to a Level 1 trauma center quick."
The ramp was shut down after the accident and remained closed late into the night because of damage to the guardrail, but reopened before Monday morning's rush-hour commute.
