Portis shines in Bulls' summer league opener

Bobby Portis lived up to his billing as a player who should have been chosen higher in the NBA draft.

The 6-foot-10 forward produced 23 points and 7 rebounds as the Bulls opened play in the Las Vegas summer league with an 84-71 victory over Minnesota on Saturday. Second-year forward Doug McDermott added 20 points.

Portis showed a variety of offensive skills. He was confident with his faceup jumper, even knocking down 3-of-4 attempts from 3-point range. Portis opened the second half with a couple of fast-break alley-oop dunks after running the floor hard. The Bulls selected Portis with the No. 22 pick of the draft. Most projections, including the Bulls' own chart, had Portis going between No. 10 and 15, so it was a surprise when the Arkansas sophomore was available.

McDermott hit 9-of-16 shots from the field. Second-year center Cameron Bairstow had 9 rebounds and 3 blocks. Point guard Ramon Galloway, who left LaSalle in 2013, added 17 points and 9 assists.

No. 1 overall draft pick Karl Anthony Towns had 9 points and 9 rebounds for the Timberwolves. Zach LaVine led Minnesota with 20 points. The Bulls will face Toronto at 5 p.m. on Sunday.
