Dog Days of Summer off to a splash

The seventh annual Dog Days of Summer celebration kicked off Thursday in downtown Libertyville with local dogs participating in a fun jump.

The event combines family-friendly and educational activities in Libertyville's Cook Park and the annual DockDogs dog jumping exhibition and competition, presented by Pampered Pup'z. Events continue through Sunday.

Local dogs participated in a Big Air jump Thursday, with 10 dogs selected to compete in the local competition after the opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. Friday. The jumping takes place at the X-Treme Dog Park in the parking lot of the PNC Bank at 325 N. Milwaukee Ave.

The weekend event features 150 nationally ranked dogs that run down a 40-foot dock and jump into a 27,000-gallon pool, in the Big Air Long Jump, Xtreme Vertical High Jump, and Speed Retrieve Timed Jump and Swim events in competition through Sunday.

Other scheduled events Saturday in Cook Park include a Lake County sheriff's K-9 demonstration at noon, a doggy fashion show at 1 p.m., a pet parade at 1:30 p.m., games at 2 p.m. and yoga at 2:30 p.m. Sunday activities include a multi-faith pet blessing at 11:30 a.m., exercise with your pup at noon and the dog pie hurl at 1 p.m. More than 30 vendors expected to attend.
