Chicago Cubs come from behind in nightcap to sweep Cardinals
The Chicago Cubs scored 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday ninth to score a come-from-behind 5-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field. The victory gave the Cubs a sweep of a day-night doubleheader. In the afternoon, they beat the Cardinals 7-4.
Dallas Beeler came up from Class AAA Iowa to start the nightcap, and he worked 5-plus innings, giving up 4 hits and 2 runs. The Cubs had given Beeler a 1-0 lead in the fifth on an RBI single by catcher Taylor Teagarden.
The Cardinals put the first two runners on base in the sixth, chasing Beeler. A forceout and a single gave St. Louis a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, pinch hitter Miguel Montero walked with one out. A single by Jonathan Herrera moved Montero to second, and Addison Russell's single down the first-base line and into right-field tied the game and put runners on first and third.
Dexter Fowler then the ball back to pitcher Kevin Siegrist, who could have thrown home. However, Siegrist tried for a double play at second and threw wildly into the outfield, allowing a run to score. Anthony Rizzo's sacrifice fly scored the third run, and the Cubs added an insurance run in the eighth.
