Big remote-controlled airplanes return to St. Charles

The passion for airplanes never goes away. People involved with the Fox Valley Aero Club already know this.

The club's Windy City Warbirds and Classics event wrapped up its three-day event Saturday as more than 70 pilots from seven states and Canada were on hand to fly nearly 200 flight-ready, large-scale model remote-controlled airplanes at the club's airfield in St. Charles.

Club board member and event coordinator John Fischer of Plainfield, said he expected from 1,000 to 1,500 people to attend the three-day long event. For information on the club, visit foxvalleyaero.com.

VII German fighter plane flies over the corn field at Fox Valley Aero Club's second annual Windy City Warbirds and Classics large-scale RC airplane event in St. Charles Friday. The plane, designed by Anthony Fokker of Holland, was considered state-of-the-art at the time and the best fighter plane of the war. As a part of the armistice, Germany had to hand over all the D. VII's to the Allies so they could study them. Laura Stoecker/lstoecker@dailyherald.com
