135-year sentence for shooting two McHenry County sheriff's deputies

A 52-year-old Holiday Hills man who wounded two McHenry County sheriff's deputies and sparked a manhunt in October 2014 was sentenced to 135 years in prison yesterday. Scott B. Peters, an Army veteran who admitted he hates cops, was convicted of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer after an April trial and faced up to 140 years in prison for wounding deputies Dwight Maness and Khalia Satkiewicz, who were responding to a well-being check at Peters' home. "Your acts were cowardly acts," McHenry County Judge Sharon Prather told Peters before sentencing him. Full story.

COD studying possible tax, tuition cuts, Hamilton says

College of DuPage officials are delaying a vote on their proposed budget to give them time to consider several financial issues, including the possibility of reducing tuition and cutting or abating taxes. "We are putting in changes that actually change the strategic direction of the college," Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton said during a meeting this week with the Daily Herald's Editorial Board. Defense: 'Astonishing' amount of sympathy for woman accused of killing daughter

As he stood outside a Rolling Meadows courtroom with a woman accused of murdering her severely disabled daughter, attorney Thomas Glasgow said the outpouring of sympathy for his client has been "astonishing." Bonnie Liltz, 55, of Schaumburg, is charged with first-degree murder in Courtney Liltz's death last month in what authorities say was an unsuccessful murder-suicide attempt. Mount Prospect man gets 5 years for 7th DUI

A Mount Prospect man who authorities say has six prior DUI convictions has pleaded guilty to a seventh. In exchange for his guilty plea to felony DUI Wednesday, Piotr Kowalczyk, 48, was sentenced to five years in prison and ordered to pay $6,979 in fines, court records show. Full story.

Rauner vetoes put suburban government on notice

Some suburban school districts say a property tax freeze "compromise" Gov. Bruce Rauner offered as he vetoed the state budget leaves them in the dark. Rauner also reiterated he wants to change the way the state divvies up funds for schools, a controversial concept in recent years that has had some suburban schools upset because they'd lose money. Frank Kaminsky knows a few people who have worked with Michael Jordan. The 7-foot-1 Kaminsky will now play for the team Jordan owns. The Benet Academy and Wisconsin grad was chosen No. 9 overall by the Charlotte Hornets in Thursday's NBA Draft. "It's just crazy to me that he thought highly enough of me to pick me with the ninth pick in the draft," Kaminsky told reporters in Brooklyn after being selected. Full story.
