Some suburbs reported 4 inches of rain in 24 hours

Some areas of the suburbs received more than 4 inches of rain in the 24-hour period through Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain totals were highest in Kane and DuPage counties, with Elburn reporting 4.45 inches of rain, followed by Carol Stream with 4.11 inches, Elmhurst with 3.98 and Geneva with 3.93 inches, the National Weather Service said.

As a result, DuPage County Stormwater Management was operating the Elmhurst Quarry Flood Control and Spring Creek Reservoir on Salt Creek, as well as the Fawell Dam in Naperville on the West Branch DuPage River. Three of the four major flood control facilities were in operation Monday night, in addition to all of the county's gravity operated facilities.

In Naperville, officials announced at 9 p.m. that four roads were closed due to standing water: Julian from Porter to Prairie; Bower Road from Washington to Loomis; Inland Circle; and the viaduct on North Aurora Road west of the Route 59 train station.

In Elmhurst, police reported flooded streets throughout most of the village.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning that expired at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday for central Cook County, Kane County, DuPage County and other areas throughout Illinois.

A tornado warning issued for Will County expired at 8:15 p.m. Monday. Earlier the central and eastern portions of Cook County were under a tornado warning when spinning clouds were detected.

Other affected areas include central DeKalb County, southern Ogle County and Lee County.

ABC 7 Chicago reported that the inbound Eisenhower was closed between Harlem and Des Plaines avenues at about 7 p.m.

O'Hare and Midway saw flight delays as much as three hours long.

Drivers are advised to use caution and not drive into areas where water covers the road.
