Wheeling's Heritage Park reopens with big celebration
Wheeling Park District celebrated the near completion of the first phase of the two-year $38 million renovation and flood control project at Heritage Park with a grand opening party Sunday, June 7.
The celebration included free daylong activities, beginning with sunrise yoga; an afternoon autograph signing with Baseball Hall-of-Famer, National League All-Star and Cubs right fielder Andre Dawson; special kids' activities; and the movie "Field of Dreams," shown under the stars at the Performance Pavilion, among other activities.
Wheeling Park District's Heritage Park is a great destination and gathering place for all ages. It is at 333 W. Dundee Road, between Wolf Road and Northgate Parkway, in Wheeling.
The park is open sunrise to sunset and features a pristine lake, 1.3-mile pathway looping for a leisurely walk or run, picnic shelter and ample open space, sports fields, fan seating and concession building, outdoor performance pavilion, adjacent Family Aquatic Center for summertime water thrills and more.
The lake and six basins are capable of holding 49 million gallons of stormwater to relieve Des Plaines River flooding in Des Plaines, Mount Prospect and Prospect Heights. The basins retain and systematically release water in the event of major storms.
