Learn about native plants returning to Tomo Chi-Chi Knolls

The Forest Preserve District of Kane County invites you to learn about "The Botany of Tomo Chi-Chi Knolls."

Restoration management has brought positive changes in the plant communities at Camp Tomo Chi-Chi Knolls in northern Kane County.

The area, part of the Freeman Kame Forest Preserve in Gilberts, was once choked by nonnative, invasive plants. After three years of habitat restoration work, native plants are now returning.

Find out more at the program from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 18, at Freeman Kame Forest Preserve, 40W095 Freeman Road, Gilberts.

A tour of the site will take place which will showcase the botanical results of the vegetation management work. The emphasis will be on plant identification, both native and nonnative.

District restoration technician Andy Olnas will lead a tour of the site, showcasing the botanical results of the vegetation management work. The emphasis will be on plant identification, both native and nonnative. Olnas will point out the botanical "surprises" that have shown up, as well as the invasive species that continue to present challenges.

The program is part of the "Learn from the Experts" series offered by the forest preserve district in conjunction with the Geneva and St. Charles park districts. "Learn from the Experts" programs focus on local ecology topics. The programs offer in-depth information and learning opportunities for those age 18 and older.
