Save-A-Pet to host Kitten Shower, Petathlon in June

It's kitten season, and Save-A-Pet is hosting an afternoon of fun, games, prizes and refreshments at its annual Kitten Shower from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at the shelter, 31664 N. Fairfield Road, Grayslake.

Foster and adoptive homes for kittens are needed. Don't forget to bring a shower gift; items needed include powder and liquid kitten formula, baby scales, snuggle-safe heat disks, soft tip rectal thermometers, disposable thermometer covers and more. Save-A-Pet's Kitten Shower "wish list" can be found at www.amazon.com; wish list name: SAPkittenshower.

Save-A-Pet is also getting ready for the annual Just One Day event Thursday, June 11. This is a day when animal rescue communities around the country band together to change the destiny of the more than 10,000 companion animals in shelters all across America by pledging to become a "No Kill Nation" for a day.

Save-A-Pet staff members will travel to surrounding animal control facilities to rescue cats and dogs. In order to make room for these animals, Save-A-Pet will be offering special adoption promotions through the end of June.

Last year, Save-A-Pet rescued 25 animals.

Pet owners are also invited to the "Petathlon" from 9-11 a.m. Sunday, July 12, in Libertyville's Cook Park. This is a pet- and family-friendly 3K dog walk and pet fest held in conjunction with Libertyville's Dog Days of Summer.

In addition to the dog walk, there will be live music, activities, live music, and adoptable Save-A-Pet cats and dogs. Fees are $35 for adults, $20 for children younger than 17 and $45 for virtual walkers. For information and to register, visit www.petathlon.org.
