Disc Golf Tournament and Free Disc Golf Clinic in Palatine
Palatine Park District, home to the 18 hole disc golf course at Margreth Riemer Reservoir located east of Quentin Road between Palatine Road and Wood Street, is hosting two disc golf events in June.
Palatine Park District is offering a free disc golf clinic led Josh Graham. This clinic is designed for those new to disc golf tournaments or those who would like some formal instruction. The free clinic will be held on Saturday, June 6 at 4:30pm and will include instruction on basic techniques, improvement of current technique, strategies, disc golf etiquette, and tournament rules.
On Sunday, June 7, Palatine Park District will host the Margreth Riemer Open Disc Golf Tournament. Disc golfers of all skill levels are invited to participate in this 3rd annual Pro/Am tournament event. Tournament divisions include Pro Open, Advanced, Intermediate, Recreational, Novice, and Juniors (13 and under). Cash awards will be given to the top finishers in professional divisions after two rounds of 18 holes. Prizes for top finishers will also be awarded in amateur divisions after two rounds of 18 holes. Contests will be held and prizes will be awarded throughout the event. Amateur players who pre-register for the tournament will receive a player's pack that includes one disc. The event will begin with check-in at 7:30am followed by a Players' Meeting at 9:15am, Round 1 at 9:30am, lunch, Round 2 at 1pm, and prizes, contests and games from 3:00pm to 4:00pm. The Ring of Fire contest is sponsored by golf level partners American Chartered Bank and Sports Authority. Silver level hole sponsors include Disc Golf Association and Sports Authority.
Tournament fees range from $10 to $40 depending on division and PDGA membership status. The pre-registration deadline is June 5 at 4:30pm. Registration can be done online at www.palatineparks.org, by mail or fax, or in person at Community Center, Birchwood, or Falcon Park. Registration will also be accepted on the day of the tournament beginning at 7:30am at Margreth Riemer Reservoir.
Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, players use a flying disc or frisbee. The disc/frisbee is thrown from a tee to a basket, which is the "hole." As a player progresses down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive shot from the spot where the previous throw landed. Finally, the "putt" lands in the basket and the hole is completed. The object is to throw the disc/frisbee from the tee area to the target "basket" in the fewest number of throws. The course at Margreth Riemer Reservoir is open from sunrise to sunset daily, April 15 through October 15. All holes include Mach 3 baskets and tee markers with signs indicating hole location, distance, and par. The course is non-supervised and no reservations are needed. Bring your own disc.
